Emergency, ambulance & fire numbers

For the most accurate location

  1. Step outdoors or stand by a window — open sky gives the sharpest GPS fix.
  2. Move away from tall buildings, metal roofs, bridges and underground spaces.
  3. Turn on Location, Wi-Fi and high-accuracy mode in your phone settings.
  4. Use a phone rather than a laptop — phones have true GPS.
  5. Stay still for a few seconds while the location sharpens.

Stay safe until help arrives

  1. Move to a safe spot away from traffic, fire, water or falling objects.
  2. Do not move an injured person unless they are in immediate danger.
  3. Check breathing. If they're not breathing, start chest compressions: hard and fast in the centre of the chest.
  4. Press firmly on heavy bleeding with a clean cloth and keep the pressure on.
  5. Lay an unconscious person who is breathing on their side to keep the airway clear.
  6. Keep them warm and calm. Give no food or drink.
  7. Keep your phone on and charged, and send someone to guide the responders in.
